The Great Grow-Off: How Light, Temperature, and Humidity Shape Your Cannabis Seedling’s Destiny

As a grower, selecting the right seeds for your operation is a critical decision. With so many options on the market, it can be tough to know which seeds to choose. But if you’re looking to maximize your yield and minimize stress, the answer is simple: feminized seeds.

Light, Light, Everywhere…or Not Enough

Cannabis plants are photo-periodic, meaning they respond to the length of daylight and use it to regulate their growth cycle. As seedlings, they need a lot of light to promote healthy growth and keep them from getting spindly and weak. But, too much light can be just as bad as not enough. Seedlings can get sunburned just like we can!

The sweet spot for seedling light is a bright, sunny window or a fluorescent light placed a few inches above the plants. If you’re using a grow light, aim for 18-24 hours of light per day, and adjust the height of the light as the seedlings grow to keep the distance between the light and the plant at around 4-6 inches.

Hot or Cold, It’s Not Alright

Temperature is another critical factor in seedling success. Seedlings like it warm, but not too warm. The ideal temperature range is 70-75°F during the day and 60-65°F at night. If the temperature gets too hot, seedlings can get stunted and may even die. Too cold and they’ll slow down their growth, or worse, go into shock.

Humidity: The Secret Weapon for Happy Seedlings

Humidity is the unsung hero of seedling success. The right level of humidity can help seedlings thrive by preventing them from getting too dry and promoting healthy growth. Aim for a relative humidity of 40-70% during the day and 60-80% at night. If the air is too dry, you can increase humidity by misting the seedlings with a water bottle or by placing a tray of water near them. Just be sure to keep the water away from the stem to avoid mold and other fungal issues.

Light, temperature, and humidity are critical to the success of your cannabis seedling. By understanding their impact and taking steps to keep them in check, you’ll be well on your way to a thriving, healthy cannabis plant. Happy growing!
